Mr. Z Bakery: Craving Donuts Led Me to Something Unexpected

When it comes to Bacolod, locals often say tourists come more for the food than the sights. But even with so many food choices, most stick to the same few things: inasal, cake, and piaya. While it’s nice to enjoy what we’re used to or what Bacolod is known for, I think trying something new once in a while can be a breath of fresh air. Instead of always going for what’s familiar, let’s take a chance on discovering something we’ve never tried before.

My "New" for the Week: Mr. Z Bakery

In Bacolod’s food-loving culture, where familiar tastes often steal the show, there’s something new I discovered by chance: Mr. Z Bakery. Located at Square Premier, Ground Floor, 888 Chinatown, Gatuslao St., there’s little to know about the story behind the bakery, but the photos they post of their bread will be enough for you to say, “I’ll get five of those, please”.

So, I caught a cold during the weekend probably because the weather is already shifting from blazing hot to rainy. Negrenses refer to this as “kambyo klima.” As I slowly recovered from my weekend cold, my appetite started to return, and with it came a craving for donuts. Turning to the Grab App, I searched eagerly for any type of donut available nearby.

After a bit of scrolling, I found a bakery offering a variety of baked goodies. With a few taps, I placed my order, then waited for it to arrive.

Egg Tart
Overload Sandwich
Pork Floss Bun
Oreo Cheese Bun
Spicy Chicken Floss Pizza

And no, they didn’t have donuts but everything looked so delicious in the photos that I couldn’t resist. My order arrived, and I dug in. I started with the egg tart which was nice, but a bit bland for my taste. Next, the Overload Sandwich, which was a hit – packed with delicious flavors.

I hadn’t tried the Pork Floss Bun, Oreo Cheese Bun, or Spicy Chicken Floss Pizza yet, but they looked promising.

I was pleasantly surprised by the packaging of my order. It came in a box with a clear casing, allowing me to see everything I had ordered. Despite the affordable prices, the packaging had a very elevated feel to it. It added a touch of sophistication to the whole experience, making me feel like I was receiving something special and carefully crafted.

The takeaway is this: embracing new experiences leads to delightful discoveries. While familiar favorites like inasal and cake hold a special place in our hearts, stepping outside our culinary comfort zones can bring unexpected surprises.

As I savored each bite of the Egg Tart and the Overload Sandwich, I came to appreciate the joy in trying something different. And, the attention to detail in the elevated packaging added a touch of sophistication to the entire experience, reminding me that even the simplest pleasures can feel extraordinary when approached with curiosity and an open mind.
